‘UMUT GÜNDÜZ’ AWARENESS IN THE CYCLING TOUR!
It was in the agenda of the 56th Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey to raise awareness on bicycle crashes in traffic. Billboards of the Tour included slogans as “Bicycle is a vehicle” and “Spot the bicycle in Traffic,” while Umut Gündüz, the rider who lost his life in a crash perpetrated by a drunken driver, was among the figures used in the billboards.
Umut Gündüz, 19 years old rider who lost his life in an accident caused by a drunken driver on his way home after the training last year in Ankara, was deemed perfectly faultless in the police report as he was riding fully equipped on the right lane.
The driver was caught upon dropping his license plate, yet it caused a great deal of protest to see that he was still free 6 months after the incident.
SPEAKING UP AND SEEKING FOR JUSTICE FOR UMUT
The grieving family opened social media accounts and shared posts under the hashtag #SpeakUpForUmut to search for justice and raise awareness.
Many journalists, politicians, artists, sportspeople, authors and responsible citizens supported the campaign and spoke up for Umut. Ankara Metropolitan Municipality named the first lap of its lengthy cycling track project after Umut Gündüz.
FOR A LIFE ON BICYCLE...
Umut’s family joined the 56th Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey and unfurled a banner in the race. “The biggest dream of Umut was to ride in big cycling organizations like this one. Yet a drunken and reckless driver took his life at the age of 19,” they said.
The family will continue to raise awareness on the issue with their banner #SpeakUpForUmut #JusticeForALifeOnBicycle in the final stage of the Tour in Kuşadası.
